Herald and Review Library: Ries, Lt. R. E.,Jr.; Article on back of photo; "There has been a lot of fighting done in the south Pacific, and Lieut. R. E. Ries, Jr., has been right in the middle of a big chunk of it.
On a Christmas holiday visit here, Lieutenant Ries sat in the home of his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Hupp at 918 East Prairie avenue, and calmly unraveled a story of almost daily action against the Japanese during the period when U. S. forces were taking over the initiative in the battle for the Solomon Islands. For his part in the fight, Lieutenant Ries has received the Navy Corss and has a Distinguished Flying Cross on the way--tow of the top emblems of recognition for heroism. He is one of the five remaining original members of the now famous torpedo Squadron 8, whose Lieutenant Gay was the only survivor out of 15 men who attacked a Jap carrier at midway. Lieutenant Ries was not on that mission. Made 'Suicide Attack'; the Navy Cross he received in recognition for his participation in an attack on a Jap task force of 18 ships Aug. 24 -- an emergency mission that appeared at its outset to be a 'suicide attack' for the five torpedo planes sent out to engage the enemy. 'It was in the Coral Sea area that the attack was made,' Lieutenant Ries said. 'We had just returned to our carrier after a....."
