Description

Photograph of George W. Kraft (d. 8/21/1851, d. 8/26/1931). He was a business man and hotel owner, who was originally from Baltimore, MD. He came to Decatur at 13 years old, and was enrolled in the 3rd Ward School. He spent his summers working for the Ammann & Mattes' Brickyard while in school. Kraft worked in the the soft drink business for 41 years starting in 1884, and eventually became the head of the Whistling Bottling Co. He was also the part owner of the Kraft Hotel. Kraft was the captain of the Rescue Hose Co. No. 1 (volunteer firemen) for 13 years, and his company was the winner of the national championship in a contest in Council Bluff, IA. He was also the president of the Volunteer Firemen's Association of Decatur. Kraft was a member of the Macon Lodge No. 8 AF&AM, Coeur de Leon Lodge No. 17 of the Knights of Pythias, Moose, Elks, and Eagles. The photo was used in the Decatur Herald on August 27, 1931.
