Description

Photograph of the Staley, A. E. Mfg. Co. Building. "This mill was formerly one of the Decatur Cereal Mill Co. plants. The Decatur Cereal Mill Co., originally the Decatur Union Elevator Co., was erected in 1895 by F. M. and R. E. Pratt. The Pratts had been in the grain business in Decatur since 1880. The name was later changed from Decatur Cereal Mill to the Pratt Cereal Mill Co. (by which it was more commonly known) and still later to the Wellington Starch Works when Pratts sold out to the Wellington Co. in 1905. In 1902, when the American Hominy Co. was organized in Decatur, it purchased the above mill from the Pratt Cereal Co. Augustus E. Staley, who started in the starch making business in Baltimore in 1898, bought the Wellington Starch Works in Decatur in 1909. In 1919 Staley bought the American Hominy Co. plant, formerly one of the Pratt plants, and it was used for storage until 1921 when it became the first of the Staley soy bean processing plants. After years of remodeling and expansion at the Staley Mfg. Co., none of the original buildings remain according to Ruth Cade of Staley's. 2-24-55. (inf. from clips and Decatur and Macon Co.
