Herald and Review Library: Shaffer, Major Dale L.; Article on back of photo; "Dale L. Shaffer, 23-year old Eighth Army pilot who has made 23 bombing raids over Europe, was recently promoted to the rank of major and is now base operations officer at an American air base in England. Major Shaffer, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Shaffer, 509 Stuart avenue, holds the Air Medal, three Oak Leaf clusters and the Silver Star. The citation for which he received the Silver star reads: 'For gallantry in action, while serving as combat leader on a bombing mission over enemy occupied continental Europe, July 14. Under his inspiring leadership, a highly important and heavily defended military objective was successfully bombed.' The oficer is a former Decatur high school football star and student at James Millikin university."
