Description
Herald and Review Library: Wylie, Haywood, son of J. C. Wylie, Decatur, IL. Trained at Harlingen Gunner School, Harlingen, Texas. Obit: "Decatur Man Dies in Crash; Staff Sgt. Heywood O. Wylie, 27, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe C. Wylie, 2650 North Jasper Street, was one of 35 persons killed in the crash of an Africa-bound transport plane on the coast of Dutch Guiana in South American. The crash is described as worst disaster in American aviation history. The message received by his parents from the adjutant general's office says: 'The Secretary of War desires me to express his deep regret that your son, Staff Sgt. Heywood O. Wylie, was killed Jan. 14, in an aircraft accident in Latin American area.' 'Dink' Wylie, as he is familiarly known in Decatur, was born in Albion, April 14, 1915. The family moved to Argenta during his infancy, and he attended grade and high school there. He married Violet Marie Batchelder April 10, 1935. He entered the service March 13, 1942 and was sent to Scott Field where he attended radio school. Later he was sent to Harlington, Texas, then to Greenville, S.C. army air base, where he took his flight training. From there he went to Florida. His wife, who lives at 1625 North Clinton street, returned to Decatur when he left this country. While in Decatur, Wylie was employed at the Oakes Products Corp. and later at the Grigoleit Co. Besides his wife and parents, he leaves three sisters, Mrs. Namoi Gereau, and Josephine Wylie of Decatur, and Mrs. Ruth Hoyland of Forsyth, and one brother, Paul Wylie of Decatur."
