Description
Herald and Review Library: Young, John; Article on back of photo; "The Japs didn't like us so very well.', John Young, former member of the Tigers American volunteer air squadron in China, remarked casually today.
Young, who served in the army from 1936 until July 10, 1941, when he joined the Tigers, was in Burma and other points in China from Aug. 1941 until July this year.
'Our squadron got 300 confirmed Jap planes, at a bonus of $500 apiece,' Young said. 'the american pilots and planes are better than the Japs.'
'You can fill an American plane full of holes, and it'll limp back to the port, but a Jap plane is all engine, speedy, and deflates like a balloon with the first bullet puncture.'
Two hundred and fifty pilots and ground crew men were in Young's group. Young worked with the ground crew.
'The Japs would send warnings over their regular American broadcast that they'd come over and wipe us out. They didn't do so well,' Young laughed.
Young, formerly of Decatur, will enter the army soon, and will be made either technical or master sergeant in the air force as a result of his experience. he has been visiting his sister, Mrs. Walter Doolin, 1705 North Edward street, and left today for Detroit to see his 'girl.'"
