Herald and Review Library; Hanks, Pvt. Virgil M., Jr. Article on back of photo; "Pvt. Virgil M. Hanks, Jr.; Pvt. Virgil M. Hanks, son of Mrs. Marie Hanks, 425 West Eldorado street, was recently appointed a public relations staff photographer at the Marine Corps base at San Diego. He enlisted in the marines in August, and finished 'boot camp' several weeks ago, winning expert honors in rifle, bayonet and pistol." "Just a year ago, newspapers throughout the country were featuring pictures of marine combat actions on Bougainville. Sgt. Virgil M. Hanks, marine combat photographer and a Decatur resident, took many of those pictures. Sergeant Hanks, a slender, blond young man now 23 years old, is home on leave, visiting his mother, Mrs. Marie Hanks, 326 West North street. Six months of this last year he has spent in hospitals 'sweating it out' with malaria which he contracted on Guadalcanal."
