Whitmer St., Decatur, Illinois of his command, with the distinguished service cross for heroism in action." Article on back of photo: "Maj. Gen. Louis A. Craig, First Army, presents Herbert J. Joys, technician third class, with the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism in action. The son of Mrs. Hazel Shealhan, of 1552 East Whitmer street, Joys led both medical personnel and wounded men over a hazardous route to evacuate them, under heavy enemy artillery, mortar and machine gun fire. Participating in the invasion of North Africa, Sicily and Normandy, he also holds the Good conduct medal, the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the congressional Medal of Honor. Before entering service July 30, 1941, he was employed at the Benson Creamery Co.,"
