Herald and Review Library: Matthew, 2nd Lt. Melvin R., Article on back of photo; "Melvin R. Matthew, son of the late county treasurer W. O. Matthew and Mrs. Matthew, Blue Mound, was recently commissioned a second lieutenant in the army. He formerly taught in the Decatur high school, and after entering the service, was stationed in Iceland for seven months. He returned to the United States in November 1942, to enter office training. He is now stationed at Camp Wheeler, Ga., and recently had a furlough here."
