Description
Herald and Review Library: Miller, Cpl. Eugene; Article on back of photo; "Cpl. Eugene Miller Back Home, Released by Russians, by Joyce Thompson of the Review Staff; Cigarettes-real American cigarettes the best in the world-meant good treatment and food for soldiers held as prisoners of war by the Germans, Cpl. Eugene Miller of 356 North Illinois street, who was captured by the Germans on D-day, June 6, said today. Corporal Miller, a paratrooper, member of the famous 101st division, made his first and last combat jump on the Cherbourg peninsula near St. Lo last June and was captured the same day. good treatment and an extra amount of sour, black German bread and weak soup were almost assured if the prisoners of war at Stalag 3-C located on the Oder river east of Berlin had American cigarettes which came with the Red Cross parcels, he said. Although American money was accepted by members of the Volksstrum-German home guards-who guarded the prison, cigarettes could buy almost anything. Twenty cigarettes meant an extra loaf of black brad, and other commodities were bought with cigarettes."
