Description
WWII - Herald and Review Library; Coughlin, John A. (Jack), Mr. and Mrs. (Mrs. deceased 1/23/1956) 6/24/1942. Article on back of photo: "Describes Sensations During Shipwreck, Jack Coughlin Rescued, Corporal Now Visiting Wife, Parents Here by Harold M. Stalker of the Herald Staff: Corp. John A. (Jack) Coughlin relaxed with his pretty wife at their home at 221 S. Taylor Ave. last night and vilified German submarines, not only for sinking the ship on which he was en-route home, but for causing a two-week furlough to be cut in in two. The Decatur soldier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas O. Coughlin, 1764 North College Street, was one of the 21 soldiers surviving the sinking of an American passenger boat on June 15 about 60 miles off the New England coast. His ship was one of a convoy being escorted to the United States from a North Atlantic base. Jack and nine others from his outfit, were being sent back to enter officer's training school at Camp Davis, N.C." "Two Torpedoes Hit. Suddleny about 11 p.m. on the night of June 15, Corporal Coughlin said flares were sent up on one ship as a warning that a submarine attack was expected. He was on gunwatch. One torpedo struck his ship, then another crumbling it like paper." The full story was published in the Decatur Herald, Wed, June 24, 1942, page 3.
