Herald and Review Library: Whittaker, T.Sgt. Ralph J., Article on back of photo; "Abandons Plane; When only one engine remained functioning in his Eighth air force B-17 Flying fortress, Tech. Sgt. Ralph J. Whittaker bailed out into a wooded area near the front lines in southern France which he believed was German-held territory. However, the sergeant, who is a radio-operator and gunner, and two of his crew members were picked up by American ground troops. His fortress 'Lady Be good' had been hit by flak over railroad yards in Germany and one engine caught on fire. When the third engine failed, the pilot gave the bail-out order, just above the front lines. the rescued airmen were taken to Paris and later flown back to England. Sergeant Whittaker's wife, Mrs. Catherine Whittaker, lives at 1185 West Forest street."
