WWII - Herald and Review Library; Easterling, Wayne, 11/8/1943. Son of Mrs. Robert (Clara) Easterling, Brush College Rd. Article on back of photo: "With the colors: Rowan Survivor Back to Service: Seaman first class Wayne H. Easterling, survivor of the destroyer, U.S.S. Rowan was sunk Sept 11 off the Italian coast, have returned to New York for a new assignment after spending a month visiting his wife in their home at 1982 East North Street, and his parents Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Easterling, rural route 5. Easterling was a fire controlman on the destroyer Rowan which sank and immediately after a torpedo hit. He was in the water three hours before his rescue and suffered a head cut. He was recognized by Decatur relatives and friends in a picture of survivors of the U. S. S. Rowan which appeared in the Decatur Herald. Easterling has been in the navy since the summer of 1942. He received his boot training and specialists training at Great Lakes. His wife is the former Ruth Hughes."
