Description
WWII - Herald and Review Library; Furrow, Ernest F., 3/16/1943. Articles on back: "Four sailors give a quick count on their fingers of the 32 Japanese planes the U.S. Battleship on which they are stationed shot down with her anti-aircraft guns in the air-sea battle of Santa Cruz last Oct. 26. The ship's guns bagged all 20 of the enemy divebombers which made the initial attack on it. Behind the men, on a steel gun panel, the ship's artist has graphically depicted the vessel's score against the Japs: the 32 planes, and three cruisers blown to the bottom by the battlewagon's 16-inch guns in the Battle of Guadalcanal, Nov. 14. (Associated Press Wirephoto)" "Furrow recognized in Picture of Men After Navy Victory: In a picture run in Tuesday's Review of four sailors and a ship scoreboard of hits made on Japanese planes, several Decatur persons recognized Ernest F. Furrow, former director of the Southside Community center. the picture showed the unidentified battleship's score of 32 Jap planes which had been shot down by the ship's anti-aircraft guns and three cruisers sunk in t he battle of Santa Cruz on Oct. 26, 1942. The four sailors were giving a finger court of the score. Furrow resigned his work in Decatur to re-enlist in the navy on Aug. 22, 1940. he had previously served 15 years in the navy, and was a member of the recreation department here from July 1, 1937, until he re-entered the service."
