Description

Herald and Review Library: Hitt, John L., Article on back of photo: "Training a dog for patrol duty along the Atlantic coast is the interesting and unique assignment of Coast Guardsman John L. Hitt, 21, of Decatur. Young Hitt is home on a weekend leave to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rollie E. Hitt, 619 West Cushing avenue. Stationed on the famous estate of J. E. Widener in Philadelphia, "Jack" Hitt is one of 30 coast guardsmen who were specially selected to train dogs for the detection of enemy activity along Atlantic beaches and coast line during the war. Last night Jack said Mr. Widener, known in the East as a famous owner of racing horses, offered the use of his stables and jockey quarters for the training of the dogs, as well as the men."
