Description

Herald and Review Library: Lamar, Lieut. Wilmer, Article on back of photo; "The Germans have the same advantages in Italy as they had in North Africa except that the Allies now have actual combat experience that they lacked before, says Lieut. Wilmer Lamar, former Decatur high school teacher home on sick leave following an injury in Bizerte. 'Again the Germans have the advantage of holding the defensive position. In North Africa our army (General Patton's Seventh) couldn't dig decent fox holes because of the rocks and had to rely mostly on slit trenches,' Lieutenant Lamar said. 'The Germans, on the other hand, had been there long enough to blast into the hills and occupy excellent shelters in deep trenches and caves. In fact, they were hidden so well that we'd go along for days and never see one of them.'"
