Description

Herald and Review Library: Layette, Elmer; Article on back of photo; "Decatur Sailor tells Russian Convoy Battle; A Decatur sailor with an Atlantic battle story to tell is third Class Petty Officer Elmer Layette, who used to hustle luggage at the St. Nicholas hotel and later at the LaSalle in Chicago. He has been home to see his mother, Mrs. H. C. Wickiser, 2035 East North street, and has left for further duty at the Armed Guard center, Brooklyn, N. Y. It was from that center that he went out into the Atlantic last fall, manning a gun on a merchant ship headed for Russia. Four days and nights before the convoy of merchant ships with which he was traveling was to reach a Russian port, submarines attacked it, the small sandy-haired former bellboy said."
