Herald and Review Library: Parker, Pvt. Charles; Article on back of photo; "Pvt. Charles Parker, of the U.S. army infantry, is home on convalescent furlough after two years in Iceland and four months service in England. He carries a small piece of metal from a rib of a German plane shot down over Iceland. During the 23 months he was stationed in the north, Private Parker said that the weather was never above freezing. His work was mostly guard duty and unloading ships. In England since August, the soldier saw a few bombings and was on duty as a guard at an air base or in a city helping to get people off the streets and into air-raid shelters during these small raids, he said. the son of Mrs. Thelma Parker, 1937 East William street, Private Parker and his brother, Richard, enlisted in the army Sept. 16, 1940, and took their basic training together at Fort Custer, Mich. Richard is now in new Guinea and has been overseas for a year."
