Description

Photographs from the April 7, 1914 fire that destroyed the Powers building properties at Water and Main streets. The properties destroyed and affected included the Powers estate, Linn & Scruggs store, the Leavenworth Store, the Powers Theater, Decatur Railway & Light Co., Nihart Drug Co., C. J. Vandeventer, Burtschi Brothers & Schoenle Co., and Oldham & Stadler. The fire was discovered by Riney Swartz, the night watchman, on the fourth floor of the Powers building. Chief Devore of the fire department immediately recognized that the fire had been purposely started by an unknown person as he discovered there were oil soaked rags scattered throughout the building and the fire doors had been left opened. Within three hours the entire block had been destroyed. The total loss was estimated to be about $750,000.
