Description

Photograph of Charles S. Hankins (d. 10/1/1933). He was the former owner and operator of the Decatur Independent Telephone Co., which he sold to the Illinois Bell Telephone Co. in 1907. He was a pioneer in the use of underground telephone cables, and encouraged the adoption of a state law requiring their use in business sections. he came to Decatur in 1882, and had a real estate business at 201 N. Main St. He sat on the city council in 1895-1896, and was a candidate for nomination for mayor in 1897. He also served as the Republican County Central Committee Chairman. The photo ran in the Decatur Herald or Daily Review in 1897.
