Description
Photograph of building at 316 N. Main St., believed to be taken about 1889, was found in the personal effects of Byron Askins, who died in 1949. The picture is of the building at 316 N. Main street and a part of the Library Block. The house at the left was owned by Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Howenstine. The library block was finished in 1889 and it is believed that this picture was made as furnishings were being put into one of the buildings. The upper floors of the building were occupied by the Decatur Business college, later known as Browns Business College. The library block was nearly destroyed by fire in 1892, but was rebuilt with a few months. The name Library block was taken because the Decatur Public Library was located near the corner of the block which extends on around on E. William street. Information from clippings. Photo ran March 15, 1950.
