Description

The first photo was taken August 23rd, 1898 at the George A. Keller racetrack located just north of Garfield Ave. and between the I.T.S. tracks and the Illinois Central R.R. tracks. The track was closed in 1908 when local option hit Decatur and reopened in 1910. Then a cyclone damaged the grand stand and eventually the buildings were torn out and fences removed. In 1916 Keller sold the land to the Comet Automobile Co. who constructed their factory there in 1917. Comet Automobile Co. sold out to L.P. Halladay Co. in 1924. In 1928 the Halladay Co. and the Biflex Corp. merged and Biflex Corp. took control. In 1935 the Biflex Corp. was purchased by the Oakes Products Co., a division of the Houdaille-Hershey Corp.
The second photograph was taken at an unknown date and location.
