Description

Photograph of C.J. Hartley, the founder of the C.J. Hartley Co. He founded the company in 1897 wth his son, Arthur J. Hartley. He came to Decatu in 1882, and first worked with W.L. Oakes at Decatur Novelty Works. In 1884, he became the superindendent of the Warren & Durfee Manufacturing Co. on S. Franklin St. While working there, he invented and perfected an automatic grain weigher, which was built and marketed by Warren & Durfee Co. In 1897, he started the C.J. Hartley Co., and took over the business of Warren & Durfee Manufacturing Co. C.J. Hartley Co. made a line of pumps for domestic purposes and in connection with pneumatic water systems. The photo was taken by Abrams, and ran in the Decatur Daily Review on December 7, 1913.
