Photography of John W. Smith. He was an attorney of Chicago and formerly of Decatur. He left Decatur in 1877 and went to Chicago where he became a member of the law firm of Byum & Smith. While in Decatur he was a partner with Gallagher & Emerson. He was well known as a writer and devoted most of his time to the writing of law texts and was well known as a legal writer. In 1903 he contributed to the library of the Millikin University about 50 volumes from his own library. They were books from his own collection of old and rare volumes. Among them was the "History of Macon Co." written by Smith. Photo ran in the Decatur Review Dec 6, 1903.
