Description

Photograph of House on corner of N. Franklin and E. Williams Streets. "the home of Dr. J. T. B. Stapp, called Decatur's first capitalist stood for many years at the corner of Franklin and William streets on ground now occupied by the Decatur post office. The house was built in 1855 and bought by Dr. Stapp from Henry Prather. It was later owned by I. A. Harkrader. Dr. Stapp, an native of Kentucky, came to Decatur about 1858 with $20,000, considered a fortune at that time. He invested in property around Central Park and in Macon county farm land. Dr. Stapp died in 1882. The white stone lions, one of which is visible at the front entrance of the house, caused considerable controversy in later years. some persons believed that they were great works of art probably imported from Italy at great cost. Others contended that the lions were picked up for practically nothing in Chicago. the house was identified for many years as 'the house with the lions.' Photo ran 2/4/1951."
