Photograph of Joseph Mills (died July 6, 1913). Veteran Decatur lumberman. He bought land at the corner of N. Main and William Streets in 1853 and started a carpenter shop. He was a contractor and building until 1878. During this time he erected, among many other important buildings, the Old First Methodist Church, Stapp's Chapel, D. S. Shellabarger house, now the high school annex, James Millikin house, and a great many business places. In 178 he became a partner of W. B. Hary in the lumber business. In 1911 the Mills Lumber Co. was sold to the Lyon Co. Its site is now occupied by the Home Mfg. Co. Photo by VanDeventer of Decatur, ran Mar 3, 1910 in the Decatur Herald or Review.
